Developing Early Maths Concepts – A Real Life Approach

This course will provide teachers with an understanding of early maths concepts and how to build on these through real life experiences with children.

It is practical, inspiring and interactive, highlighting the importance of a thematic and explorative approach to maths. The course demonstrates how books, memory games and activities can enhance learning and create a holistic, stimulating and enjoyable maths environment for teachers and children. Equally emphasizing maths communication skills by connecting to literacy and cross curricula practices using maths dialogue that children are conversant with.

Teachers will be introduced to concepts regularly used in new entrant classes –

• Explorative and play based maths approaches;
• Early place value; the importance of ‘5’ and ‘10’ as a value;
• Emerging financial literacy through play, ie value of currency, shopping
• Maths games, ideas and a range of websites
• Literacy links – rhymes, finger plays
• Visual resources and tools.

On completion participants will:

• Have an understanding of new entrant maths and be familiar with primary school maths concepts
• Be able to use a variety of resources to enhance maths communication
• Effortlessly link maths and literacy using familiar stories, rhymes, language.
